Frequently Asked Questions

How does Chiropractic work?

Chiropractic works because every part of you, right down to your last cell, is a self-healing, self-regulating organism controlled by your nervous system. Millions of instructions directed from your brain, flow through your spinal cord and nerves to all parts of your body. Signals are also sent back to your brain to indicate what the body is doing and what is happening outside of it. Misalignments of vertebrae can interfere with the normal transmission of the nerve signals thus distorting the vital exchange of information. Improper nerve activity, either too much or too little, ruins tissue and internal organ function.  The end result is symptoms, the body's way of telling you of a problem.

What causes a Spinal Misalignment?

Any major or minor trauma, such as a fall, a jolt, or a sudden movement, can cause the vertebrae (the bones of the spine) to slip from their normal articular position. Once a displacement of the spine takes place, negative structural changes occur, and this disrupts normal body balance and symmetry. The body cannot work correctly when parts are not where they are supposed to be.

How does Palmer-specific Chiropractic differ from other forms of Chiropractic?

Dr. D.D. Palmer discovered the principles of chiropractic in 1895, and for years all chiropractors used similar procedures based on his "meric" or full spine system. Dr. Palmer's son, B.J. Palmer, began a full scale research clinic in Davenport, Iowa which eventually led to the Palmer Specific Procedure.

He found that the original cause of spinal problems begin at the top most area of the spine. All subsequent misalignments are secondary effects. The specific correction of this primary problem allows the correction of the total spinal imbalances.

How long does it take to get well?

It depends upon how severe your condition is, if it was caused by any trauma, and how long it has been going on. The initial intensive care phase may have frequent visits. This is to alleviate the symptoms, stop the weakening process and begin the stabilization of the spine. In a typical case this will take two to eight weeks.

The patient is then given the option to begin corrective care. This phase has a reduced frequency of visits with further stabilization and strengthening of the spine. The purpose of this care is to help prevent a relapse or new problems in the future.

What happens when you pop your own neck and back? Is that a safe thing to do?

"Popping" or "cracking" one's own spine or allowing a well-meaning friend to do so, is not a safe thing. Research findings demonstrate that random manipulation of the spinal joints can have detrimental consequences to: motion and position components of the nervous system, structural stability of ligaments and vascular tissues.

It is a mistake to associate causing the spine to "pop" with a chiropractic adjustment. The temporary relief from a "crack" to a joint is a natural response by the body. If you feel the need to or you are often making the spine "crack"; it is a strong indication that proper chiropractic care is needed. When the spine is in correct alignment you typically will have full range of motion and it won't "pop" when it's stretched.

Why do some people go to Dr. Zarbuck even when they are feeling fine?

Many people find that their general health is better when they stay "in" adjustment (proper spinal alignment) and it prevents problems. This is similar to going to the dentist twice a year even though you don't have a toothache. Research shows that there are clinical benefits with chiropractic care for asymptomatic (non-sick) patients. An article recently published in the "Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research" by Sean Hannon BA, DC entitled: Objective Physiologic Changes and Associated Health Benefits of Chiropractic Adjustments in Asymptomatic Subjects: A Review of Literature is quite educational. Dr. Hannon found over forty studies where symptom free patients experienced measurable health benefits with regular chiropractic care. His concluding remarks were: "It is plausible that chiropractic care may be of benefit to every function of the body and have the potential for long-term, overall health benefit to those receiving chiropractic care".

I've heard Chiropractors help flu patients is this true?

Yes we can, here's some interesting information concerning the worst influenza in the last century!
CHIROPRACTIC AND THE SPANISH FLU OF 1918
In 1917-1918 there was a deadly flu epidemic throughout the world. It was called the Spanish Flu and was spread by soldiers heading home at the conclusion of W.W.I. It has been estimated that 20 million people died worldwide including 500,000 Americans. This 1918 viral flu has been described as capable of sickening and killing a person on the same day.(1) The public noticed that the morbidity and mortality rates for Chiropractic patients was considerably less than those of the general public. Chiropractors became known as "Flu Doctors" and it was through this improved standing in the public realm that were able to gain licensure in the birth place of Chiropractic (the state of Iowa). Walter Rhodes reported that in Davenport, IA (the city where the first chiropractic adjustment was performed by D.D. Palmer) there were 4953 influenza patients seen by Medical Doctors with 274 deaths. Chiropractors at the Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport adjusted 1635 patients with the Spanish Flu and had only 1 death. In the state of Iowa Medical Doctors treated 93,590 patients with 6116 deaths (1 in 15). In the same state (excluding Davenport) there were 4735 Chiropractic flu patients with only 6 passing away (1 out of 789).(2) Similar statistics were found elsewhere in the United States.(3)
